Using a Speaker's Eye-Gaze in Conversation: Benefits and Costs
نویسندگان
چکیده
Eyegaze is a powerful source of information in face-to-face conversation. Our previous work showed addressees can use this information rapidly and flexibly, speeding referential disambiguation when the speaker was clearly looking at a target object versus a similar competitor. However, monitoring eyegaze demands attentional resources which may also have costs during collaborative tasks. Since the most reliable indication of gaze direction comes from looking near a speaker’s eyes, but people can also judge less precise head orientation more peripherally (e.g., Loomis et al., 2008), we compared addressees’ ability to disambiguate instructions to pick up objects when a speaker’s eyes were visible or were obscured by mirrored sunglasses, compared to a baseline where the speaker was completely hidden. We present analyses of addressees’ eye movements which reveal the extent to which they benefit from attending to and coordinating the use of the speaker’s disambiguating eye versus head movements during language comprehension.

Unaddressed participants’ gaze in multi-person interaction: optimizing recipiency
One of the most intriguing aspects of human communication is its turn-taking system. It requires the ability to process on-going turns at talk while planning the next, and to launch this next turn without considerable overlap or delay. Recent research has investigated the eye movements of observers of dialogs to gain insight into how we process turns at talk. More specifically, this research ha...
متن کاملUse of Speaker's Gaze and Syntax in Verb Learning.
Speaker eye gaze and gesture are known to help child and adult listeners establish communicative alignment and learn object labels. Here we consider how learners use these cues, along with linguistic information, to acquire abstract relational verbs. Test items were perspective verb pairs (e.g., chase/flee, win/lose), which pose a special problem for observational accounts of word learning beca...
متن کاملDo children with autism use the speaker's direction of gaze strategy to crack the code of language?
Normal toddlers infer the referent of a novel word by consulting the speaker's direction of gaze. That is, they use the Speaker's Direction of Gaze (SDG) strategy. This is a far more powerful strategy than the alternative, the Listener's Direction of Gaze (LDG) strategy. In Study 1 we tested if children with autism, who have well-documented impairments in joint attention, used the SDG or the LD...
متن کاملThe Role of Interactivity in Human-Machine Conversation for Automatic Word Acquisition
Motivated by the psycholinguistic finding that human eye gaze is tightly linked to speech production, previous work has applied naturally occurring eye gaze for automatic vocabulary acquisition. However, unlike in the typical settings for psycholinguistic studies, eye gaze can serve different functions in human-machine conversation. Some gaze streams do not link to the content of the spoken utt...
متن کامل"Look who's talking!" Gaze Patterns for Implicit and Explicit Audio-Visual Speech Synchrony Detection in Children With High-Functioning Autism.
Conversation requires integration of information from faces and voices to fully understand the speaker's message. To detect auditory-visual asynchrony of speech, listeners must integrate visual movements of the face, particularly the mouth, with auditory speech information. Individuals with autism spectrum disorder may be less successful at such multisensory integration, despite their demonstra...
